Agartala, May 10 (FD) Former legislator of Tripura’s Karbook Assembly constituency, Burba Mohan Tripura, passed away at the age of 79 on Saturday morning at 7:21 AM at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Cancer Hospital. He had been battling a severe form of cancer for an extended period and was under treatment at the hospital for the past few months.
Burba Mohan was elected to the Tripura Legislative Assembly in 2018 from the 43-Karbook constituency as a BJP candidate. However, due to internal disagreements and alleged discriminatory treatment by top BJP leaders, especially then-Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, he distanced himself from the party. In 2022, a year before the 2023 elections, he joined the Tipra Motha Party but was denied a ticket to contest the polls.
His death has triggered widespread mourning across the Karbook subdivision. Political leaders from all major parties, including Food Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, Minister of State Bishaketu Debbarma, Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman, Mayor and MLA Deepak Majumdar, and several others, paid their last respects at the State Assembly premises where his body was brought for homage.
Burba Mohan is survived by his wife, three sons, and a daughter. Many political leaders, including Congress president Asish Kumar Saha, remembered him as a true "people’s man" and expressed deep sorrow over his untimely demise, calling it a significant loss to Tripura’s political landscape. FD SB
